Time travelling

August 15, 2010

Well it’s happened again and, since this happens so often, you’d think that I’d be used to the process. Judging by my reaction I apparently have not yet mastered the art of saying goodbye to my beloved daughter. Yup she’s gone again on yet another journey, this young woman has put more miles behind her than a cross country stage coach. She has gypsy blood in her of that I am sure and she makes no bones about that fact. She’s a traveller, an explorer of communities and cultures and creatures and she loves what she’s doing.

Me, I love to hear her stories, see her pictures, her drawings, her fabric bits, her little collections of treasures from special places. We stay in touch by phone, facebook and email. Do you think, just over 100 years ago, that Alexander Graham Bell had any idea how much of an influence he’d have on the lives of future generations? All he was doing originally was trying to create a hearing aid for his wife. Speaking of Mr. Bell, we’ve been there, my daughter and I, to his museum in Cape Breton. Very cool place indeed.

What do you think he’d say if he could time travel to now, to this time to see a blackberry or an iphone? I bet he’d be fascinated don’t you?  That’s the thing about ideas, you never know where they’ll go. Some people worry that their ideas are stupid or silly or foolish or …fill in the blanks, and so they never make them public. What a tragedy that is, to let the fear, yes I believe it’s fear, of failure I suppose, to stop a person from following through on what could be a great thing.

Speaking of time travel: what do you think? Possible, close by, far away, impossible?

Safe journey sweet one, love you lots. Mom
