You’ve all heard, by now, about the Secret, the story, the book and the everything else that has followed since then. If you haven’t, where’ve you been, it’s about the power of intention, the asking of a dream and the answering of that dream as the rules of the universe allow. I really like the premise of the Secret but I hold no illusions about it either. If I have a dream I cannot simply say “ok this is what I want now bring it to me” that’s not how the power of intention works. Martin Luther King had a dream but he most certainly did not sit back and wait for others to fulfill that dream on his behalf. He put himself out there, he spoke of his dream wherever he went, he gathered a following of believers and, in community, they all made the dream a reality. In fact, the intention was so strong that the United States now has a president Obama, a man of colour running their country: can you imagine what that conversation would have been like during Martin Luther King’s day?
So, what’s this got to do with Victoria’s Secret? So glad you asked, and I’m adding a bit of personal story here too if that’s alright with you. Today is my anniversary, 32 years to the same man: he’s very patient. We are going out for a lunch date to a lovely little venue in our area so I decided to wear something a little fancier than country jeans and tshirts. I grabbed my bra to put it on and decided it didn’t fit well with the shirt I was putting on so I searched for my other one, yup I only have two bras….While looking for said lingerie item I was thinking about intentions…Here’s what I came up with. Imagine if I went into Victoria’s Secrets and started looking for lingerie without knowing what I was looking for. “Can I help you?” “Yes I’m looking for some lingerie” “Well what are you looking for?” “I don’t know but I will when I see it.” Talk about making the job of that sales person difficult.
So, after going through every item in the store I finally decide that it’s a bra I want but I dont’ know what size, I don’t know what style and I don’t know what colour..This could take days to get through and I’m thinking, at this point, that the sales person would have given up on me a long time ago. Goals are like that: if you’re not specific you will never achieve them. How can the universe, in all of it’s wisdom, answer you if you don’t get very specific.
I’ve had clients who have said “I want to be successful in my business” and then, when they try to describe to me what that would look like, they cannot come up with a vision. Well no wonder they’re not successful yet. As we work together and get very very specific on the goal everything shifts and the vision does become the truth but not until there is absolute clarity on the goal.
I have a goal, to help a million women earn a million dollars by following their passion and turning it into profit, I know I will do it and I know, with vision and focus, you too can achieve your goals. Now go be fearless, Jan
